The Sensory Narrative: Olentium
Olentium - in Latin, meaning loosely ‘of scent, smell and odour’ - is my own artisanal brand of niche perfumes. Launched in 2022, with a single fragrance, it has grown to a six-Eaux de Parfum range with myself as founder, perfumer, marketer, and visual identity and content creator. The perfumes are inspired by place - the history, flora, literature and coastal landscapes - of Malta and its neighbouring islands; Sicily in particular. In perfumery, more than many other sectors, the narratives loom large as points of differentiation in a very crowded, noisy market. As I say, it takes a brand founder’s struggles to know those of others. Olentium has taught me invaluable lessons in the power of authenticity to sell quiet, understated luxe to just the right, select audience.

In a global fragrance market dominated by high-fashion conglomerates, the challenge was to build an artisan brand that felt both deeply rooted in the soil of the Mediterranean and yet globally competitive in its aesthetic and olfactory profiles.
-
By applying the principles of "Quiet Luxury," I positioned Olentium not as yet another fragrance launch, but as a sensory, personal "translation" of place. For my flagship scent, Bal Baroque, I channeled the chiaroscuro of Caravaggio and the intrigue of Valletta’s past into a linguistic and olfactory manifesto. The brand was built on the premise that a fragrance should be evoke an atmosphere, not just be a good scent.

Olentium successfully transitioned from a botanical side-hustle to an internationally recognized house. In 2024, Bal Baroque was named a finalist in the Artisan Category of the Institute of Art and Olfaction Awards in Los Angeles—validating that a rigorously crafted narrative, rooted in provenance, can command the world’s stage.
